New York City is where I got my start negotiating, arranging and leading improv classes for the office. At one point I was overseeing over 120 improv for business classes for businesses a year all within NYC, so I have a good number of stories.

I remember one particular event very vividly. It was for the NBC page program. Pages are the people who assist in shows at NBC Studios in New York City, famously the character Kenneth Parcells on 30 Rock (played by UCB alum Jack McBrayer) was an NBC Page.

In any case, it turns out there are quite a few people in the NBC page program at any given moment. Most of them are younger professionals just out of college looking to break into show business. The executive in charge of the program decided it would be fun to treat all of their current NBC pages to an improv team building class. They wanted 6 concurrent sessions to run 120 pages (and other associated NBC colleagues) through and they wanted this to happen in NYC on a slightly smaller budget than I was used to.

That's a tall order in New York City where space is a premium.

Fortunately we found a studio that had 6 different breakout rooms. One of them was a space Beyonce had recently filmed a video in. It was this giant all white soundstage. It may have been Single Ladies she shot there, but I can’t say I remember for certain.

They were willing to offer a discounted rate because the workshop was happening in December near the holidays when they were largely dormant. Even though the space was gigantic we still had to use elevators to get everyone into their breakout rooms after an initial welcome in the large all white soundstage.

That can be tricky, and I remember I was glad to have carefully orchestrated who would go where and how they would be led there before the event. Although I love improvisation, if you try to improvise your way through something like room assignments you can really end up in a mess.

Same thing after the breakout sessions were over. Everyone reconvened in the large white room for a final improv for business exercise that was engaged in en masse. It is important to start breakout sessions together and also end them together, it creates a much deeper sense of a communal experience.

I still rent that space out routinely to this day for larger NYC events and I always make sure that the plan for the day of is carefully orchestrated.

We serve the greater NYC area, including Midtown, Financial District, Tribeca, SoHo, Greenwich Village, Chelsea, Hudson Yards, Flatiron, Union Square, Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Battery Park City, Lower East Side, Chinatown, East Village, West Village, Dumbo, Downtown Brooklyn, Williamsburg, Long Island City, Astoria, Roosevelt Island, Kips Bay, Murray Hill, Sutton Place, Gramercy..
