A nonprofit organization hosting a conference in Albany, New York once presented The Radical Agreement Project with an interesting challenge. They were interested in providing an improv based workshops at their conference but they wanted this workshops to last at least 4 hours. The idea was that the workshop would fit into their schedule which divided each day of the conference into half day workshops. So, something less than 4 hours would be unacceptable for the conference due to the way it was being arranged.

For a first improviser, 4 hours is an exceptionally long time to engage in improv comedy exercises. Even though improv is really fun and also energizing, if you overdo it it can become a taxing and exhausting experience. I explained this to the organization's point of contact but they were resolute. if I wanted to work with this particular organization at this particular conference, I was going to need to make my improv-based workshop last 4 hours.

The easy solution to this is to build out the improv based workshop with pre and post sections. Since improv puts you up on your feet to learn kinetically, when I need to add additional sections to a workshop I look to pair it with more heady exercises. I ended up a 60-minute session at the start of the 4-Hour block and another at the end.

The beginning session would introduce basic improv concepts and generate prompts, ideas and inspiration for the Improv portion that was to come afterwards. The ending session would review what we had learned on our feet and look to reinforce those teachings.

So the way the flow of the entire Workshop work was:

60 minutes sitting down with pen and paper
5 to 10 minute break to use the restroom, grab a drink and decompress
110 minutes up on our feet
5 to 10 minute break came back
60 minutes seated in smaller groups

If you are looking for a workshop that lasts longer than 2 hours I would probably start thinking it's time to ask ourselves is there any pen and paper work that we can add to the up on your feet experience. I've Done 3 hours long up on your feet workshops and they've been okay but not as good as a 2-hour one.
