Improv@Work

An Albuquerque firm looking for a public speaking workshop found the right partner when they reached out to The Radical Agreement Project (I love developing public speaking workshops). There was nothing too particularly unique about this request, they just wanted to hone a group of about twelve people's presentational skills.
I included in this workshop an exercise I'm particularly fond of called CONTINUOUS STORY. This is a variation of One Word Story or Couple Sentence Story With Lead-Ins if you are familiar with that RA favorite.
Anyway, I included it in the in the workshop and I thought you might be interested to see what the directions are and how the exercise works.
The instructor should have half the group up in a line while the rest sits. This is a slower version of One Word Story. The exercise starts when should a suggestion is provided by the instructor who then points at one person in the line to start telling a story.
After a few sentences, the instructor should point at someone else to continue it. The instructor should ask them to work on telling their parts of the story confidently and comfortably, even though they are making it up. If they are good at this whoever is leading the exercise can pick up the pace at which they point at new people.
The instructor should tell participants that if they can comfortably tell made up stories on the spot, then sharing information on subjects they are experts in should be easy. The participants should be reminded throughout the exercise that the comfort of the audience is more important than their own comfort when delivering a presentation.
It is critical to set their audience at ease by behaving comfortably and confidently.
This is a good exercise to both expand participants idea of their own public speaking capabilities while focusing their attention on the needs of the listeners over their own.
