Improv@Work

The old joke is that if you ask a barber what the solution to your problem is they'll probably say a haircut and it's no different with me. I do improv and so I think the solution to just about everything can be found using Improv. This makes me unlikely to consider other aspects of an improv-based workshop besides the curriculum.
That's a big oversight though, if you forget about the events that are happening on either side of your improv-based workshop when you schedule a team building or professional development training session with an improv institution like The Radical Agreement Project. I recently ran a improv-based communications workshop for the floor staff of a small department store in Alexandria, VA.
I didn't even know small department stores existed anymore but there I was in the middle of one running a workshop.
When it was over the manager of the store took everybody out to lunch just around the corner to a chicken sandwich and beer joint that was so delicious and so welcoming I thought I should mention it here on the page. The Rub Chicken & Beer restaurant is simply next level and I would suggest that anyone doing a team building or professional development training session at their company, if you are in Alexandria, or frankly the greater DC footprint, when it is over take all the employees out and grab a great chicken sandwich and a beer (or you know a soda or water) to congratulate yourself for doing the hard work of developing your skills professionally.
Mary Poppins used to say that a spoonful of sugar helps your medicine go down and I say training axioms that you might pick up in an improv based workshop go down a heck of a lot easier when you have a delicious chicken sandwich and a tangy beer to wash them down with.

Other Alexandria Improv Spots!
Given that Alexandria lives in the shadow of DC it might be natural to look for improv there instead of Alexandria itself. But there are some very good within Alexandria to consider.
The Little Theatre of Alexandria
Don't let the word little fool you, the structure may be small but it's impact is large it does offer intermittent classes for adults and school age students. It also maintains a resident improv troupe, The Retros.
A fun loving team of experienced improvisers monthly and relies on a lot of audience interaction!
