Improv@Work

A small radio station near Alpharetta, GA had me in for a team building event. I remember that it was near the holidays and their normal conference room was unavailable due to a food drive. For that reason, the improv workshop was happening inside quite the irregular space.
On the far Eastern side of their radio station was an L-shaped room with a ceiling pitched at a sharp diagonal. The ceiling came down so low that at one end of the room, if you were taller than 5 1/2 ft, you had to crouch. Evidently at some point the room had been used as a giant closet because there were coat hooks lining one side of the wall and giant dirty windows on the other.
Maybe the most striking element of the room was the sharp angle the roof elevated at; while you did have to bend on one end, on the other you felt like you might be standing inside a cathedral.
The biggest problem was that the room was longer than it was wide, 20 ft long, 10 ft wide. It was tight, which meant exercises that you would do in a circle were difficult and awkward now being done in an oblong shape. I relied on an environment based exercise for the warm up, Let's All Go To The…, instead of my usual exercise that calls for a circle formation.
Highly verbal exercises worked well too. Things like Passion Rant or Passion Circle, Cocktail Party and Expert Circle (done not in a circle) worked well in the long thin space. The workshop went well, but it would have gone better if we had been in a more suitable space.
As the workshop wound down I reviewed the sales process leading to this event and decided I hadn't been specific enough when sharing with the client what sort of room we needed for the workshop. You always want to host a workshop inside a space that's large enough for all participants to stand in a circle with nothing between them. You want the space to be private, clean and safe to move in.
if you can get a space like that then you can have a great improv comedy workshop at your office!
