Improv@Work

A recent overnight trip to Arlington, VA found me with a couple of hours to kill before it was time for me to lead an evening improv class focused on honing presentational skills.
I had already booked into my hotel and I had a copy of a dense new book on the subject of improv comedy sitting on the table next to the bed. Ugh a part of my soul sighed... A jog was also a possibility.
I had heard that the Riverbend Park Loop was a fantastic running trail but looking at my phone's map app it was going to take me a little bit longer to get there then I wanted to commit. Closer to me was the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Trail which looked interesting. I decided I'd give it a try and threw my running shoes on.
The Canal Trail turned out to be a crushed gravel trail, which I love, and the scenic vistas I encountered were fantastic. I didn't see a single car for my entire run and I didn't even have to worry about restrooms because I came across one or two accommodations along the way.
It was such a fantastic way to spend my afternoon and I ended up feeling quite energized from the experience which I carried with me into the workshop later that day. It was a good reminder that to perform at your best it's required to sometimes step away from your craft.
i'm something of a low grade workaholic so when I have extra time to kill I'm much more likely to work on a skill, read a paper (or book) or build more pages for SEO, then I am to do something I actually enjoy. But if I want to be great at my main occupation, or if anyone wants to be great at their main trade, you have to carve out time to take care of yourself. I'm certainly glad I did.
If you're in the Arlington area, I would suggest taking a run, or at least a walk, down the Chesapeake Ohio Canal
