A recent improv based workshop for a company in Aurora, CO had me thinking about the terrible power our fear of being wrong wields over us. The focus of the workshop was agility in the face of the unexpected so I had selected a series of games that feature surprises to start us off. None of them were all that complicated, but the simplest exercises can be challenging for first timers and a normal amount of mistakes were being made.

What I noticed was that the group in question wasn’t okay letting a mistake slide. In a game where you are supposed to clap simultaneously with a partner, one person was a little slow and immediately called out for it. In another that asked participants to mimic each others one participant was corrected for also mimicking hand movements (which was actually fantastic).

And so on.

Corrections were coming so frequently I stopped the workshop so we could talk about it. “What do you think the impact of correcting your teammate is?”, I asked. The general response was that the team could be successful.

Maybe, but it isn’t very important that you be able to clap simultaneously, or mimic a face or build a letter using your body. Improv games are unimportant and just as silly as they sound. Trust, respect and teamwork aren’t silly though, they are critical.

When you correct someone you are teaching them that contributing comes with a price to be paid. But when you celebrate someone’s participation you are teaching them that they are valued and that their contributions are needed. Either way you go, it is a self fulfilling prophecy.

The reason to support a teammate has less to do with the hear and now and more to do with your next ten interactions with the teammate in question. Sure the subject matters! Always correct someone trying to administer a poisonous allergen to a medical patient.

But if it is a mistake about a photocopier or fax machine, that’s one where you migt want to try celebrating a mistake more than correcting it!

Other Aurora, CO, Improv Spots!

The playful, artistic vibe Aurora is infused with makes it a natural environment for improv! And these institutions have taken root there.

Parker Players

The Parker Players are a full improv theater, offering regular classes, shows and corporate events. PLUS they promise they are more than all that. I'm not sure what they mean exactly, but it sounds promising. Maybe they also andle banking?

Improv United

Improv United sounds like improv's version of The Avengers but judging from the website they host more classes and shows than they fight crime. But that might be a front, like Superman working as a reporter! Even if they are fighting crime, you should still take them up on some of their improv offerings, Clark Kent is a great reporter by all accounts.
