Known for its youthful vibrancy and intellectual buzz, Austin Tx is home to a number of tech firms, including start ups, tech giants and everything in between. This is so true it has an unofficial nickname of Silicon Hills, which made me smile when I first heard it at an annual summit I was teaching an improv based workshop at. The focus was communication and that's a common request from tech companies.

The big trick when it comes to approaching communication from an improv perspective is that there aren't good communicators and bad communicators, instead there are just different types of communicators. An improviser looks to make their teammates (ie colleagues) successful, so pegging someone as a bad communicator isn't really helpful. The goal is to communicate successfully, not to create a list of people who are difficult to communicate with.

Besides, whenever you think you have found someone who is difficult to communicate with, chances are so have they...

When I try to communicate an idea to someone, if they understand what I wanted them to understand then we have both succeeded. If they don't, then we have both failed. It is sink or swim together when it comes to communication, there is no way for me to be successful without my partner and vice versa.

In improv we try to go to where our partner is. If that means speaking slower, enunciating a great deal or any other adjustment, then we are going to want to do it. A lot of times it doesn't feel cool and that can be an obstacle. But if over enunciating makes you and your partner successful, well, success is pretty cool.

A large number of improv games lend themselves to presenting this point. Pass The Clap, Environment Charades and Listen, Reword, Say Why all reward clarity over speed or aesthetic. By playing these games and discussing their implications most professionals can take away beneficial lessons.

And that is just what happened at that particular summit!
