I had an interesting challenge come up with a corporate team on a retreat in Bakersfield, CA. Known for its proximity to extensive hiking trails near and through the Kern River Ranger District (of the Sequoia National Forest) the plan was for the team to take a light hike in the morning ending at a a mountain home managed by a nonprofit. Later that day I would lead the team in a improv based workshop focused on collaboration.

Great, I thought, this will be a blast!

Two weeks before the event was scheduled I sent an email to my contact that included advice on how to prepare the team for the workshop. One piece of advice that I almost thought unnecessary in this instance, was that everyone should wear clothing they feel comfortable moving in. I figured this was what they would be wearing anyway in order to go on their hike, so I almost didn't include it. I'm glad I did!

I got pushback! Couldn't the workshop be led while the team was in formal wear?

I was shocked! Formal wear? Who hikes in formal wear?

Well, in this case the team was spending the night in the home and the plan was to have the improv workshop, then a very fancy catered dinner and then they would role play a type of faux Academy Awards in which each team member would win awards according to their skills and reputation. (Don't ask me.)

I explained that I thought it sounded fun, but couldn't the team have the workshop while still in their hiking gear and change before dinner? The schedule was too tight for that, but I also suspect the EVP putting the experience together worried his team wouldn't want to stay in dusty hiking clothes too long. I suspect that because he said that to me directly.

I explained I could run the workshop but I would need to adjust some of the exercises so that no one would feel they couldn't participate in an exercise, or that it would be dangerous to do so. Dress shoes are notoriously slippery and high heels can lead to dangerous ankle sprains when combined with some improv exercises.

Instead I could offer more of a cerebral experience with most games being played while seated. My client agreed and the event went great! But it was dicey there for a bit.

Whenever I lead a corporate workshop I always prioritize safety. It can be tricky when a client has different priorities, but you can rest assured that when you work with The Radical Agreement Project your event will be fun, productive and above all else, safe.
