Improv@Work

I'll never forget driving down to Bethesda, MD with three other improvisers in order to do a performance at a political rally. At the time I had become acquainted with a local political celebrity (we met when I interviewed him at a popular improv show in Baltimore) and he had convinced me to perform some improv as celebratory entertainment at his kickoff event that weekend, when he planned to announce his candidacy for State Senator.
The event itself was at a community center on a Saturday morning, so it was a very positive energy when I first arrived. We were in an all purpose room and it became immediately clear that there would be no backstage area. While not ideal, my cohorts and I chuckled at how we were being intermingled with political supporters of our friend.
We listened to a good number of speeches and ate some powdered donuts and then took the stage. I had developed a framework for the show, which I often do when working with a corporate partner.
We ran the show as though it were a small town political caucus, getting suggestions from the audience in the guise of small town policy initiatives, which we wrote out on a large poster board held up on an easel. Then we performed about 30 minutes of improv comedy scenes, each one separately inspired by a different policy initiative. We would cross off initiatives with a marker as we went through the list via scenes.
The audience loved it! Particularly when we performed scenes that showed policy requests leading to unintentional, but disastrous results! Everyone was laughing and having a great time.
Mostly we teach improv classes as professional development workshops when working with corporate partners, but we always love to put on a great show too!
