A boutique advertising agency located in Binghamton, New York started working with The Radical Agreement Project online. We worked together a few times (maybe three or four) in 60 minute online sessions that addressed a wide range of soft skill training goals.

After a few sessions I reached out to my contact to see if they would like to try a session in person. There was hesitancy. Even though improvising online is one of the bravest things a person can do, because it is such an unusual activity, the people who had been working with me in that format were hesitant to improvise in person. They were scared.

I talked to my client about what was fun and dynamic about playing improv games in person and promised they would find the experience well worth it. That wasn’t enough; So I tried something new.

I decided I would add a feature to the in person workshop that mirrored the experience of taking a workshop online. A big reason participants were hesitant to work in person was that they would lose their ability to turn off their camera and run to their fridge or restroom whenever they wanted to, as they could online. I decided to give everyone in the workshop the same power.

Before the workshop started, I gathered everyone participating together and explained the new policy: If for any reason someone wanted to leave the workshop, they simply could without saying a word. The right thing to do was just to walk out the door and go take care of whatever business you wanted to take care of.

Being honest, that's not that different from how a normal workshop work anyway. If somebody gets a call and decides that it's important, they'll simply leave and take it. The big difference here was that I formally told everyone in the workshop that was fine before the workshop started.

And it worked like a dream. Honestly only two or three people took advantage of the feature, which is probably about as many people as usually leave a room during a workshop without explanation. So there was no real Interruption and on top of that everybody in the workshop felt much more relaxed when they knew they had this option available to them.
