Improv@Work

Maybe it is just luck of the draw, but many of the corporate improv classes I have arranged in Boston have featured very large groups separating into breakout rooms. There is something particularly majestic that permeates all of Boston, a sense of size powered by history (I think), so it makes a degree of sense that the events that being me in to lead improv for business classes there have a tendency to feel sweeping. Perhaps organizers sense the city's vibe and bend to it?
In any case, I tend to suggest breakout rooms for groups larger than 20. Ideally a professional improv workshop for a corporation will cap at 16, but I have a hard time justifying the extra expense of a second instructor over just a few extra participants. Once you hit 21 though, the quality of the event will suffer if extra instructors are not provided, so typically that is where I draw the line.
Breakout rooms work great at hotels and conference centers, typically equipped with a wealth of space options. Ideally the workshops will begin in one large conference room with all participants present. There, a lead instructor can introduce improv to participants and set expectations. Five minutes is all you need.
Depending on the schedule, concurrent 90 to 120 minute workshops will ensue, building to a final exercise that combines the workshop's takeaways with a playful sense of performative comedy. This will then be brought back to the main conference room where all the groups can enjoy a final performance by each breakout group over the next 30 minutes.
An insulin based technology company hired me to arrange just such an event in Boston not long ago. I served as the lead instructor and brought 4 veteran improvisers with me so that we could run 5 workshops simultaneously. In this instance we also added an intro session for the entire company the day before, just 60 minutes long and presented in an interactive lecture format.
By having three separate environments in which all breakout participants are together, a sense of communal experience is built. As one of the the events key goals was team building (developing team camaraderie) this is especially important. For my Boston based client this formatted structure worked like a charm.
