A few years back I was lucky enough to be asked to teach a series of workshops at a week-long conference being held in Charlotte, NC. The conference itself was in the city's stunning conference center, located in Uptown Charlotte, which suited me just fine. I stayed at a hotel about 4 or 5 blocks away and every morning I'd walk from my hotel past fantastic restaurants, cultural institutions, the Charlotte Hornets Stadium (of particular interest to a giant NBA fan like myself) and giant skyscrapers for a variety of different banks.

I passed by all of these different types of buildings on my way over to the beautiful Conference Center where I taught a wide variety of workshops on soft skill development and of course team building and teamwork. During the week I spent in Charlotte I found myself thinking about the different personalities that form a team, whether that's a team at work, or a team on stage, or in a broader sense, a team or a mixture of entities that form a city.

Just like the diversity found on a team of employees, Charlotte had a wide diversity of cultural and business institutions that created the dynamic energy of the city. And that's what you want from a team, different voices, different perspectives, all respected and all participating 100%. You could tell Charlotte has that when you walk through the city.

And it has it in different ways at different times. The participating cultural voices in the morning are different from the ones in mid-afternoon or in the evening. Maybe all the same contributors are there, but different voices would become louder or quieter depending on their relative strengths. The Italian restaurants are quiet in the morning, as are the street performers and a particularly convincing preacher. But come nightfall, those voices pick up while the breakfast spots, libraries and bakeries dim.

When we say we're doing team building, what we're really doing is empowering all the elements on a team to participate fully when they should. People, like businesses, know what their relative strengths are and if they feel welcomed and empowered to participate, they will self activate at the right times.

We serve the greater Charlotte area, including Uptown Charlotte, South End, Ballantyne, SouthPark, University City, Dilworth, Myers Park, Matthews, Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Pineville
