A Client Story

Sales is often approached as an adversarial profession. Sales people "Overcome" objections and "Educate" clients. It's natural to think then that there isn't much crossover between the very granola, hippy-dippy art taught in improv classes and sales training.
I happen to know that there is a great deal an improv class can teach you about sales because I had been working in sales for over a decade before I discovered my love of improv comedy. Six months into my improv comedy training I noticed that my approach to sales had changed. I was a better listener, I was more present, I was better in a pinch and I noticed my clients and I had less disagreements.
Prior to this I would sometimes fall into heavy disagreements with clients that I called "Overcoming Objections". I was good at it but it was unpleasant for me and the client. So six months into improv I had stopped "Overcoming Objections" but my sales numbers hadn't dropped off. I wanted to know why
Instead of overcoming objections, I was now agreeing with them, probably because of my training in YES AND. Someone would say, "I can't buy that shirt, purple is an awful color for me."
(I wasn't a shirt sales person, this is hypothetical!)
And I'd say "Yeah purple can make a lot of people look bad and you are one of them!" This sort of response ran counter to my previous approach, but I noticed it built trust and a feeling of collaboration. An objection would come, I would agree with it and simultaneously build a deeper relationship with my client.
Then I'd take the objection and build on it. I'd YES AND the objection.
"Purple looks terrible on you because you have a warm complexion. Let's look at shirts that are olive greens, warm reds and/or oranges. That should fix the problem."
By responding in this fashion I drove my pitch straight through the objection and used the objection to make my pitch more compelling. The client believes purple looks bad on them, and beliefs are hard to overcome. Why dispute it?
Instead agree with it and build on it. This is how an improviser overcomes an objection and there are tons of exercises I can lead for your team that will allow them to practice doing just that!

Other Colorado Springs Improv Spots!
The Colorado Springs improv scene is no slouch. When it comes to improv theaters, schools, collectives and so on...
A clever double entendre promising quality improv at this high altitude comedy hotspot. Peak is a standard regional improv theater in that it offers lots shows and classes. It is dangerously outside the norm however, in its decision to spell theater with an er at the end.
Improv Colorado sets its hungry eyes not just on Colorado Springs, but the entire state! Check out their fun classes for both adults and school age children.
A more formal actor's approach to improv is offered here, among many other classes designed to prepare aspiring actors for a life of peanut butter sandwiches and shoes with holes in them.
