Improv@Work

A quite large plastics company with small offices in Columbus, OH was interested in an improv-based workshop on staying in the moment. Their customer service team was evidently having trouble really connecting with client needs instead of cutting and pasting the most common solutions into every conversation.
Well, I have a very simple improv exercise that addresses that problem.
Yes And Point is a simple game often appearing early in a workshop. But I don't know of exercise tat exposes how hard it is to truly be present.
To run it, everyone stands in a circle. One participant points at another and begins to move to the spot that person is standing in when they hear them say “Yes”. Now it is up to the person who just said yes to point at another participant and receive a yes so they can move out of their current spot in the circle. Noting bad happens if a person arrives at a spot before the previous occupier has moved on, you just wait.
This is a communication exercise that highlights failures to be in the moment. Participants invariably move before they have received permission, because they anticipate they will. When we have trouble adjusting to the unexpected it is because we are expecting things to go a certain way.
You can even run it once, pause it when things are going wrong, re-explain the directions and participants will still try to move before they have heard "Yes". Sometimes people will catch themselves, starting to move but then pulling back at the last second. Tose are the most fun moments to note.
Another common learning opportunity comes in the form of support. Because people make mistakes in this exercise, others playing will want to correct them immediately.
There is no need for such corrections as everyone is learning the exercise together and there is an instructor. Moments like this are a good opportunity to mention that improvisers don't believe there are mistakes, only opportunities.
Recommended Columbus Venues
Hotel LeVeque
50 West Broad Street,
Columbus, OH 43215
(614) 224-9500
Occupying Columbus' historic LeVeque Tower, small to mid sized events will enjoy selecting between the three event spaces maintained at the LeVeque. Executive meetings and small company retreats are good fits for the LeVeque.
Hilton Columbus Downtown
401 North High Street,
Columbus, OH 43215

It's four onsite restaurants make this hotel the hands down winner for traveling food nerds. Located downtown (obvs) it is connected to the city's convention center and a frequent choice for conventions and large scale events itself.
The Junto
77 Belle Street,
Columbus, OH 43215
(614) 914-2700
This sleek and up to date event destination bills itself as a "Modern Lifestyle Hotel". It sounds cool but it is hard to know what they mean, a combination that often points to creative people being involved. Unsurprisingly, creative industries often select The Junto for their gatherings.
Other Columbus Improv Spots!
Columbus likes to laugh and the high quality improv institutions it supports are testaments to that truth!
Not only interested in improv (but also sketch, live literature and experimental theatre) The Nest nonetheless offers mostly improv classes. You may or may not be surprised there is less of a demand for experimental theatre classes.
Laser focused on improv education, they offer classes, workshops and even host shows for the purpose of educating.
Part of the national chain of standup clubs the Funny Bone intermittently offers improv classes and performances. Interestingly they bill themselves as a "Comedy Club Restaurant". If you're going there for the food, I'm worried about you.
