There's all sorts of reasons not to do improv workshops outside: wind, audibility and rain are the obvious ones. But the temptation of doing an improv workshop on the beach was more than I could resist. I agreed to it.
Oh boy, what a mistake. It was over 110° in Corpus Christi that day.
Now you may wonder why would the client make this decision. They were also from out of town. It was all oil Executives traveling for some kind of quarterly summit.
Corpus Christi has quite a bit of work in drilling and refining oil. The people coming in were from all over the country, many of them from the North like myself, and they must have imagined a beach I'm used to. A beach where, when it gets very hot, we're talking maybe 90°, maybe only high 80s and then you can take it quick dip and cool yourself off. Not so in Corpus Christi.
In Corpus Christi the water isn't so wonderfully clean and the temperature routinely pushes up above 110°! We were dying! It was so bad that after about 15 minutes I hit pause and spoke with my client privately and said that we would need to go to a nearby location and conduct the rest of the workshop there.
And that's exactly what we did. Fortunately my client was already reserving space for meetings at a nearby Hotel and we were able to quickly secure a breakout room to do the workshop. There was wonderful AC and everyone was thrilled with that decision but it was a coin flip chance that some room would be available and it was a big mistake on my part allowing my client to make that plan.
Now whenever I agree to do an improv workshop outside, which I do on occasion, I always make sure that that plan comes with an indoor option that is nearby and secured for us before we begin the workshop. That way if a thunderstorm hits we have some place to go.
