Improv@Work

A major automotive company in Detroit hired The Radical Agreement Project to come to their offices and deliver an improv based public speaking workshop for a team of about 16 executives. They were looking for a workshop that would enhance their ability to deliver great presentations while also honing their employees' skill at picking up on nonverbal cues from the attending audiences.
The workshop I delivered was a great success and the exercise And That's All was a big part of why here's how it works.
Ask the room to break into pairs and find a playing area in the room. If there is an uneven number the instructor can pair off with one person. Ask each pair to have a conversation in which one of the two participants tries to explain something deceptively complex to the other.
You choose the topic for everyone. For example: the meaning of the word “the”, the nature of a vacuum, how bicycles work, how lefthand and righthand works in verbal directions only, etc. After a few minutes choose another topic and switch who in each pairing is doing the explaining.
Now switch partners. Return to the first subject and try again. This time, insist that each sentence offered by the person doing the explaining ends with the words “And That’s All”. Give each partner a chance to explain something complex in the new pairings.
Switch partners again. Same exercise but every explanation sentence ends with the words, “Does that make sense?”
Communication is easier when it comes in digest-able packets. When explaining even a simple idea remember to communicate simple components of it and to check in with your audience as you go. If they don’t understand the foundation of your presentation they probably won’t understand the conclusion. Remind participants that It is okay to repeat or review concepts if you feel they have confused your listeners.

Other Detroit Improv Spots!
Detroit and the surrounding area is home to a number of fantastic improv institutions. Some that come to mind include:
A long form improv theater with classes, shows, a home in Ferndale, a .net domain name (classic) and a commitment to freeing people from the "rules" of improv!
A nonprofit comedy theatre, in operation since 1993 offering classes in the classic comedy trifecta: improv, sketch & stand up.
A subsidiary (can there be subsidiaries in something as bankrupt as improv?) of Detroit's Creativity Project in which both adults and youth are entitled to free improv classes. You read that right, free!
