Improv@Work

Maybe the most ubiquitous exercise at improv-based corporate learning events is Yes And Conversations. This simple but impactful exercise captures the power of Yes And in a way a first time improviser can normally grasp.
Everyone pairs up to perform a simple exchange. I like to instruct people to wander around the room in an amorphous cloud until I say "Stop". Then you pair off with whoever is randomly closest to you. But you can pair everyone off however you like.
Pairs will then be asked to plan an event. I normally choose a picnic or party for whatever holiday is coming up. Ultimately they will be asked to plan this event three times.
The first time each sentence after the first sentence will begin with the word “No”. The second time each sentence after the first sentence will begin with the words, “Yes But”. The third time each sentence after the first sentence will begin with the words “Yes And”.
Can you guess which of these three conversations will go best?
Not everyone agrees, sometimes people will really get into saying "No" or "Yes But". Still everyone will agree that regardless of which conversation they enjoyed most, the one that yielded the most complete plan (feasibility be damned) was "Yes And."
This exercise demonstrates the power of agreement. By accepting your partner’s suggestions instead of fighting them, new exciting solutions can be discovered.
What if we treated client’s ideas the same way? By approaching complaints in this fashion, problems can be turned into opportunities. Can objections presented to a sales rep be overcome by agreeing with them? (The answer is yes).
NOTE: Just because you can come up with ideas fast using agreement doesn't mean tat the first idea you come up with is te one to go with. Improvisers working in writers rooms for sitcoms or sketch shows may create one hundred options before settling on the best one to write an episode about.
