A Client Story

Years ago I was teaching an improv comedy Workshop in Fresno. I can't remember what the focus of it was, probably team building? like 50% or more of all improv workshops for the office are held for the purposes of team building.
I do remember that most of the group I was working with was a happy-go-lucky team of fulfillment reps at an alcohol wholesaler in Fresno. One of the people in the workshop decided that they didn't really like the idea of being in the workshop.
That's not so uncommon. A lot of people who attend Learning and Development events at work will be suspicious about whether or not their time is really being used wisely. in the case of this individual he decided to manifest his concerns primarily by challenging everything I said.
His biggest problem was with the concept YES AND, which he insisted could be disastrous at his job. People who arrange Learning and Development events worry about employees like this gentleman. They want to make sure that their events are bulletproof and can't be criticized as a waste of time and money at work.
So I always make a point of addressing people's concerns when they first raise them in a workshop. In this instance the gentleman was saying why should we say yes to things. My response to him I think made a lot of sense:
improvisers believe particularly in the power of YES AND. We believe that by accepting others ideas and building on top of them great things happen.
Now that's what improvisers believe, but it doesn't mean it's the only way to skin a cat. There's lots of ways to solve problems by saying no. You can solve budget short falls, bad new workflows and bad promotion candidates all by saying no.
But that's not what you're going to get from an improv comedy workshop. Instead you're going to see strategies to use yes in order to be successful just like if you took a cooking class you would learn how to make food taste good by applying heat to it. This is true even though raw vegetables are delicious. It doesn't make raw vegetables any less delicious to say that making a pizza is also a good idea.
Similarly, just because no is sometimes the right choice, tat truth doesn't yes any less powerful.
