Improv@Work

A large non profit that worked with the homeless in Jacksonville wanted an improviser to lead an ice breaker for a company wide summit. They wanted a game that would be played simultaneously by over 100 participants. After consulting with them on a number of options Evolution was selected and it worked wonderfully. If you are unfamiliar with the exercise, here is a quick description.
Everyone participates by wandering around the paying area in an amorphous cloud-like formation. Each participant starts as eggs (which players signify by placing their hands over their heads making an oval shape and saying "egg, egg, egg"). When one egg finds another, they play Rock, Paper, Scissors. The winner evolves into a chicken (which players signify by flapping their arms like wings and clucking). The loser remains an egg. When a chicken finds another chicken they play Rock, Paper, Scissors. The winner evolves into a dinosaur (which they signify by walking around like a velociraptor from Jurassic Park) and the loser devolves into egg. When a dinosaur finds another dinosaur they once again play Rock, Paper, Scissors. The winner becomes a superhero (which they signify by extending an arm with a closed fist and pretending to fly in an approximation of Superman's famous flying position) and the loser returns to be an egg.
The point of the game is to play, not to win. That is to say to focus on process (doing the exercise) rather than winning (the results). Encourage listening and "celebrating failure" i.e. not being distracted by setbacks or losing focus on what we can’t control.
If you or your organization need help selecting an exercise like this one, you should reach out by emailing terry@radicalagreement.com.
