Improv@Work

Las Vegas hosts more than a few great conferences every year. Conference organizers are often curious when they hear I lead an improv based workshops on objection handling in sales. I have a number of great exercises, but my favorite is World's Best Coach. Here is how it works:
Participants will take turns addressing a fictional team at halftime. All workshop participants will take on the role of being a player on the team except for the person taking on the role of the World’s Best Coach.
The team is losing the game badly and will complain to the coach about why they can’t win. The coach will be challenged to:
1) Hear their reasons
2) Acknowledge and respect them
3) Agree with those reasons
and finally...
4) Build on them in such a way that the reasons they thought they were sure to lose turn into the reasons they will certainly win!
This is of course, the best way to handle objections. When someone objects a product is too expensive, they are telling you they would buy it if it cost less. When someone says a product is too cumbersome they are telling you they would buy it if there were a more lithe option.
I could give you more examples, but you get it.
I often remind participants running tis exercise that saying no to a salesperson is often uncomfortable. Clients can feel vulnerable and judged. For this reason, when we hear a no it is important to acknowledge it, treat it with respect and agree with the reasoning behind it.
I always challenge the participants. Can they agree with a client’s rejection of their proposal and then build on that agreement in such a way as to position their product as a solution to the reason the client has stated they would not want it? Address the nature of an objection, not something else. A client who cannot afford a product should not be told how great that product is. A client dubious of a product’s effectiveness should not be offered a discount.
