Improv@Work

My first business trip to Kentucky was an interesting one. I had been hired by a small financial advisement firm to come and offer an improv class for the purposes of team building with a sub goal of offering communication tips as well.
I had never been to Kentucky before and so I was excited to get to my hotel and to travel to the venue for the workshop the next day.
The venue was a retreat house far out in the woods and was really spectacular. Evidently the space was run by a nonprofit after the owner had passed away and was used exclusively for these types of events. Beautiful decor, very flexible space with multiple rooms that would work great for an improv workshop and also giant windows with great views.
So I was excited to get started.
The workshop itself went as many of them do. People had a very good time after some nerves were gotten over and we had some good learning moments. So I felt pretty good about the workshop.
A few weeks later I sent my contact my feedback form. I consider requesting feedback and also learning from it a real separator between the service RA provides and most improv outfits. My client surprised me.
Overall I got a very strong review. A score of 8 out of a possible 10. But I missed a 10 out of 10 because of my last exercise.
That really surprised me, considering the last exercise I ran was one of my favorites and normally goes over very well. I ran the exercise back in my head only to conclude that it had gone well that day too.
What was going on?
In my feedback form my client explained that he didn’t understand the point of the last exercise. As soon as I read that I knew he was right.
At that time I often ended workshops with a simple improv game that would result almost always in a very funny group improv scene. I figured people had hired me for an improv workshop and it would be a shame if everyone missed the opportunity to be in a legitimately funny improv scene.
And the exercise also great application to the learning goals of most workshops, although I normally wouldn’t speak about them. I always figured it was the last exercise and while every other would include moments of reflection on their application to work life, why not on a high and not bother people with the learning takeaways.
Big mistake.
Now I always end every improv for business class with an exercise that summarizes the day’s overall learning takeaways. And I often use the same exercise as I did that day, but I make sure to build in time to discuss how it applies through the lens of the entire workshop.
My workshops are the better for it and so are my clients!
