In preparing for an upcoming improv-based team building workshop in Lynchburg, VA, my client was surprised at how much time I spent focused on preparing the people who would be attending the event. My client's feeling was that the people attending were the easiest part of the event, while the subject matter focus, construction of clear talking points and also the development of take away materials (because we were doing takeaway materials for this event) were going to be much important.
And no argument. All of those things are of course quite important to the success of your event. However the people who will be inside the workshop will be more important than any other single factor when it comes to determining the success or failure of the event.
For people to do well in an improv-based workshop they need to know what they'll be engaged in and how to prepare themselves for it. Just telling them and preparing them for the fact that they will be engaged in a theatrical workshop while at work is extremely important and will help increase the likelihood of a successful event.
The clothing that people wear on the day of the event is extremely important. When you are doing improv you move around a lot and so it's important that you are wearing clothes you feel comfortable moving in and also clothes you won't be too upset about if they get a little scuffed.
Participants should be aware of what to bring with them to the workshop, and really what I mean by that is what not to bring with them. Delicate items that could break easily or very expensive laptops that they'll be concerned about the entire time they're doing the exercises are bad ideas. That's why whenever I book a workshop with a corporate client, I always make sure that we spend at least some time talking about who will be there, how prepared they are for the event, and what we can do to make sure they are as prepared as possible.
