Improv@Work

A Milwaukee finance firm reached out to The Radical Agreement Project about scheduling an improv class for public speaking. That surprised me, because do you really do a lot of presentations when you work in finance? Well I guess you do because since then other firms in the financial services sector have reached out looking for improv classes presentational skill training too.
In any case, I developed a unique exercise for this particular workshop that was really a lot of fun and I thought I'd share it with you here. It's called BEST SALES CLERK and here's how it works:
Break the room into groups of four to six. Each group will go individually while the rest of the workshop watches as an in-house audience. This should be done with groups of 18 or less, more than that and it can become too time consuming for a workshop of average length.
In each group, one player will be a sales clerk while the others will be interested shoppers. Get a suggestion from the room of some fantastic product, something that doesn't really exist: Teleportation Boxes For The Home, Levitation Shoes, etc.
Have the shoppers be interested in the product and ask lots of questions which the clerk must answer confidently and without pause. Depending on how well this is going you could extend its allotted time so everyone has a chance to be the clerk. Be sure to mention up top that probably not everyone will have a chance to be the clerk, so if you want to give it a shot make sure to speak up.
Talking Points To Share During And After This Exercise:
In improv it is important to make audiences comfortable by signaling that you have each scene under control (even though you have no idea what will happen next). It is similarly important when making a presentation to signal to your listeners that you feel comfortable as a presenter. If a question is asked it’s important that you answer confidently, even if the answer is, “Let me look into that and get back to you.”
Remember, making a mistake in a presentation is not the end of the world, you can always send a follow up email correcting or clarifying a point. Sharing your thoughts on a subject is an act of generosity, not pomposity.

The Pfister Hotel
424 E Wisconsin,
Milwaukee, WI 53202
(414) 273-8222
Victorian-era charm abounds at one of Milwaukee's choice destinations for leisure, relaxation and, of course, networking. Small to large events will feel right at home and all will be slack jawed by the amazing views of Lake Michigan. A perfect stage for an improv for business workshop!
The Brewhouse Inn
1215 N 10th St,
Milwaukee, WI 53205
(414) 810-3350
If you're hoping your next work event will be distinctive and memorable, then where better to set it than in a refurbished Pabst Brewery? Exposed brick, giant brass kettles and more devices of the brewing industry will flavor your event, not with hops, but with aesthetic excellence! You might have a drink or two during an improv corporate training session, however.
Kimpton Journeyman
310 E Chicago St,
Milwaukee, WI 53202
(414) 291-3970
Relaxed yet sophisticated, the Kimpton Journeyman will blend your next small to mid sized professional meeting (no large events please) with the dynamic culture of Milwaukee's Third Ward. Oh and the tennis courts ar eto die for, dahlink. Improv for business anyone?
Other Milwaukee Improv Spots!
Milwaukee is known worldwide for it's beer, but perhaps it will be known primarily for its improv, given the considerable number of respectable improv venues within its footprint. Maybe someday you won't even have to say Milwaukee improv, just saying either of the words will make you think of the other!
The national chain ComedySportz clubs is a big name in improv and you can count on high quality short form performances at its locations. Get ready to laugh a lot (and pay a lot for your drinks) when you next visit the Milwaukee ComedySportz. Performances feel reminiscent of the popular tv show, Whose Line Is It Anyway?
Self branded as Milwaukee's home for long form improv, The interchange has quite the interesting model. Take classes, watch shows or become an owner for only $200!
