Improv@Work

Looking for an easy to run, super fun, super inspiring exercise to run with a team at work? I've got one for you. Last time I ran it in a corporate setting I was in Nashville and it was years ago. But I run this exercise with improv classes and teams all the time and its powerful impact on team camaraderie is undeniable.
Count To Twenty
Have participants circle up in a tight circle. Ask them to close their eyes and to count to 20, with only one person counting any one number and never having one person count two numbers in a row. Participants are also never allowed to speak over each other. When two people do speak at the same time, have the whole group start back at one. Tell them not to try to figure out a pattern or to use a strategy, like some people not counting or counting real fast after a number is successfully said.
This exercise sounds impossible but most groups succeed within five minutes. Because they thought it could not be done, that's the time to hit them with a strong dose of team encouragement and excitement. I typically say things like, "When working from a place of support and trust, more is possible than we may imagine. Unity of purpose and having each other’s backs will yield tremendous results."
If you want an impossible version, a friend of mine created one. Keep all the rules the same abut add a rhythm. Now someone must always speak out a number when the rhythm demands. Because there is an abbreviated ability to sense when others will speak, talking over each other and having to start over is far more likely.
Feel free to run Count To Twenty on your own. It is simple enough for the uninitiated. But don't forget to bring Radical Agreement in to run a full improv-based workshop when you are looking for a more impactful event.

The Nashville improv scene probably won't over shadow it's thriving music scene (maybe you've heard something about it?) any time soon, but it is still doing quite well and aspiring comedians have a wealth of options when it comes to studying improv!
Nashville Improv provides classes and shows for the public with great frequency. It's classes are particularly welcoming to beginners, so jump on into the comedy pool, the water is fine.

A character based improv thater which is aptly named as character based scenes will often feel odd!
