A Client Story

I consulted with an insurance company that had an interesting problem, or at least an interesting twist on a classic problem. They wanted their sales team to tell clients a better story about their company and insurance instruments. The sales team, I was told, was excellent but lacked creativity and couldn't create their own stories.
Improvisers tend to regard creativity not as a skill but rather a gauge of how open you are. From an improvisers perspective, creative people are people who feel comfortable sharing their ideas while uncreative people feel less comfortable sharing their ideas. But both groups of people have the same number of ideas.
So when someone tells me they want to work on their creativity what I hear is they want to work on sharing their ideas more confidently. Improv teaches us to believe in our ideas and instincts and to support the ideas and instincts of others. As a result twre are many, many exercises I could run to help someone become more "creative".
But a lack of creativity may not be an issue that can be solely addressed with the "uncreative". A lot of times people feel uncomfortable sharing ideas when the people they would be sharing them with have demonstrated a lack of support for new ideas previously. Weirdly, my lack of creativity could be your fault.
So I advised the company to work on their sales team's creativity from two directions. First I gave them a number of easy exercises they could run to drum up the old creative juices (I think I went with Seven Things, New Choice and Guest Panel).
But the real trick was giving them exercises for the larger team supporting the sales team, including management. For them I offered exercises focused on support, like ABC Bodies, Yes And Conversations and You're A Genius! I told them that I suspected the support exercises could be more impactful than the creativity ones.
And I was right.
Three months later we reconvened and then again 3 months after that. At each meeting it was reported that the sales team was doing a much better job creating stories. The sales team wasn't uncreative ever, they simply had learned not to share their stories with management for fear of criticism. Once that fear was removed their creativity blossomed.
