A Client Story

Improv Class Philadelphia, improv theater, improv theater Philadelphia, improv workshops for business

A small advertising agency in Philly wanted to work on presentational (or public speaking) skills for their team of ad execs. A fear of answering a question wrong or making an assurance that turned out to be false was plaguing their teams presentations.

That’s a confidence issue. Improv of course is all about confidence. And so is public speaking.

You have to realize that people attending a workplace presentation are probably not excited to be there. Humorously, the same is often true about audiences at improv theaters. They are there to see their friends or loved ones, not necessarily because they want to see improv.

When you have a captive audience like that it is VERY important that they understand you are happy to be performing for them. A bad improv show is one thing, but an improv show that asks you to take pity on the poor performers doing improv is orders of magnitude worse. When you leave a bad improv show you should be thinking, "I didn't like that," not "I hope Jeffrey won't be crying all night over that terrible sow. He really looked unhappy up there."

Similarly, clients shouldn't be made to feel pity for those making a sales presentation. When a presenter says something like, "I normally ave a projector for this presentation," or indicates they are uncomfortable or not that excited about their presentation, they are asking for the audiences pity. The solution is confidence.

By confidently making your presentation you are taking care of the audience. You are saying they don't need to feel bad for you, even if they dislike your presentation. You like it and that means you are okay.

Confidence then, is not an act of pomposity within the realm of public speaking, instead it is an act of generosity. So when you are asked a question during a presentation, answer it confidently! You can always send a note with corrections afterwards, Or use the ubiquitous "I'll get back to you on that'" but be sure to project as much confidence as possible when doing so!
