A Client Story

Improv Class Phoenix, improv theater, improv theater Phoenix, improv workshops for business

A client in Phoenix, AZ gave me a call and explained that they had a remote team that was awful at communicating with each other. Would I be willing to lead an improv class for them focused on effective communication when they got together later in the quarter.

Why of course I would and to do so I relied heavily on one of my favorite exercises for improv classes: The Clapping Game.

To run The Clapping Game I had the group stand in a circle. One person turns to their right, looks the person to their right in the eyes and passes them a clap by clearly clapping at an anticipatable speed. The person on the right should clap at the same time, and so on around the circle. After a bit participants can pass a clap to the left also, and a little after that in any direction. Finally the group breaks out of the circle and continues to pass a clap while walking in a jumbled cloud formation, zig zagging about the room.

In this exercise you cannot succeed or fail on your own. You can only succeed or fail in partnership with a colleague. When leading this exercise I always mention that this is also true of communication.

How can you be best ready to receive a clap from a teammate? How can you be certain your colleague knows you are passing to them and when to clap when passing a clap yourself? Passing a clap at a high speed may seem fun and exciting, but clapping before your partner can is not, because that makes your partner look bad and the purpose of the exercise is to make your partner look good.

So this exercise values accuracy over speed. And that's communication too right. Sure you could quickly dash off a very long email and speak at a hundred words a second. But just because you are sending information out fast doesn't mean it is being received.

Sometimes slowing down is the key to great communication!
