Improv@Work
Maybe the best part of a creativity workshop I ran for a boutique advertising agency in Portland was the warm up. The whole thing was great, but oh boy, the warm up had everyone laughing!
The name of the warm up I'm referring to is Seven Things.
Standing in a circle, each participant takes a turn assigning a broad topic to another participant (Common Foods, Favorite Sports Teams, Old TV Shows, etc). That person must then list seven examples that would fit in that category.
Now, they don’t have to be real things but they must be offered super fast. As each participant lists their items, the rest of the group keeps pace by rapidly patting their hands on their thighs and also loudly counting out the items up to Seven as they are listed.
So running the exercise might produce a transcript similar to the below:
Player 1: Hey Abbey, What are the names of seven rock bands that never reached their potential?
Player 2: The Velvet Underground (This is a good answer)
Everyone: ONE!
Player 2: The Beatles (This is a bad answer but it is still accepted)
Everyone: TWO!
Player 2: Pete's Garage Band (This one is made up, perfect!)
Everyone: THREE!
Player 2: Godzilla (Not even close to right but still accepted because it was said fast)
Everyone: FOUR!
Player 2: The Spatulas (Wo could forget them)
Everyone: FIVE!
Player 2: Uhm, my Mom? (This one took too long but the group powers forward)
Everyone SIX!
Player 2: Madonna (Definitely wrong)
Everyone: SEVEN! THESE ARE SEVEN THINGS! YAY!
This is a warm up exercise to loosen up participants and acquaint them with the silliness of improv. But it also unlocks creativity by illustrating tat sharing incorrect answers can be cause for celebration when working wit a supportive team.
In improv you never judge ideas. Improvisers use the saying Don’t Think to encourage the making of decisions and the bold addition of information in scenes. While not every idea generated this way is useful, some can be. This exercise is a good way to brainstorm new ideas which can be evaluated later.
