Improv@Work

In 2022 I ran an improv team building workshop for a major international bank with offices in Richmond, VA, (where I taught the improv class). I remember because there was an amazing performance of the exercise Guest Panel at that workshop.
In Guest Panel, participants are told they are part of a panel and that they are 100% identical to each other. To be clear, the participants are portraying different individuals, just very similar ones. The instructor leads a discussion in which participants build aggressively on each other’s ideas, never undermining or replacing them. Almost always the instructor will fall into the role of the Voice of Reason while the participants will take on the role of the Unusual Point of View (sorry, those were nerdy terms common in improv classes).
Guest Panel scenes become very funny, very fast. Why is that? Through absolute trust and enthusiasm great comedy scenes with surprising subject matters can be built.
The lesson that participants walk away with from the Guest Panel exercise is that better things can be built through collaboration than by yourself. Sound interesting? Request a proposal to learn how these lessons can be applied in your office.
