Improv@Work

San Antonio is, of course, known for the big fundamental (none other than Mr. Tim Duncan). So it makes sense that I would talk a little bit about improv's big fundamental (Yes And) here.
Yes And is embedded in almost every single improv exercise, form and value. But Yes And can offer value not just to comedians. In fact, it has tremendous application to workplace communication, collaboration, problem solving, creativity and ideation.
Let's look at problem solving. Imagine two colleagues trying to solve a company issue, let's say receipts aren't being tracked well.
In order to get the ball rolling on a solution we'll need one of the two employees to offer up an idea. But happens when tat idea is criticized by their partner, regardless of wether tat idea is useful or not? Well, probably a lot of things happen, but one thing I can absolutely guarantee happens is that person who offered the idea gets the message that sticking their neck out isn't worth it.
Moving forward you will find that employee is less likely to offer their ideas or assistance, not because they aren't a helpful person but because they have a natural aversion to criticism (who doesn't). So maybe you've prevented a bad idea from being implemented, but you've done it at a very high cost. You've neutered a team member essentially.]
And how valuable was it to prevent the other person's idea from being implemented? If it truly is a bad idea wouldn't everyone naturally find a new solution? And what if it isn't actually a bad idea, what of it is just an idea you don't understand?
The opposite is also. What if you say Yes to an idea you dislike? Well, you've encouraged and empowered the employee who offered the idea. Moving forward you will find that individual is more like to offer ideas and sulutions.
And that's what you want right? For your whole team to be giving it their all rather than your whole team withholding their thoughts for fear of recrimination.
