I've always enjoyed visiting Savannah, GA for corporate clients looking to use improv to improve their team's soft skills. Besides it's reputation for southern hospitality and charm, the city reminds me greatly of Anne Rice's novels (I was a fan in college) and is evidently a go to destination for Hollywood. (Gump's park bench scene was filmed here, among many other iconic cinematic moments.) So, being honest, I just like visiting.

So I was thrilled to get a call from a customer looking to hold an event that would focus on confidence. The firm had recently been acquired by a larger company and change was in the air. While I normally offer agility workshops in these instances, the team in question was a critical linchpin for the overall business. Yes they needed to be flexible in the new order of things, but they also needed to be able to clearly communicate their function within the company and delineate hard lines that couldn't be crossed, less the business suffer.

Improv is great for confidence building, of course. When you improvise you are asked to do the impossible in an instant. Jump into a scene as an airplane pilot, a chemist, a dental surgeon or a million other highly specific roles and immediately speak intelligently as an expert in your field.

Well, if improv exercises can help me present myself as a credible mechanical engineer (which I know nothing about) then these same exercise can turbocharge the confidence of actual experts in their given field. Even if they feel somewhat uncertain because of the recent acquisition and all the changes.

I developed a curriculum with 6 improv games, 2 warmups to set up a safe and playful atmosphere, and 4 main exercises. The big hit was The Translation Game in which three players take the stage. Two speak in English and the third speaks in nothing but gibberish.

Confidence can be addressed in a few different ways and maybe the most obvious is that speaking in gibberish can be a little intimidating. I made sure to laugh a lot and compliment whoever was in this role so that they got the message they were doing well at something they had never trained in or even aspired to be good at.

The real trick though is for the other two players, who are asked to know immediately what the gibberish speaker said and to announce it for everyone. So maybe Brad says, "Ichity Bokety Boo" and Liz says. "Brad is feeling hungry again, lets make sandwiches."

Now of course, all of this is ridiculous so everyone is laughing and having a great time! Improv is always good for team building too and the laughter is why.

But the scenes were quick and most people were able to play the translators. As they did I was careful to note them on speaking quickly and confidently with no face saving asides. In this exercise, whatever they said was 100% correct so there was no need to preface their contributions with caveats.

People had a few breakthroughs and it was a good experience all around.
