Improv@Work

When writing the curriculum for an improv-based interactive lecture I was delivering for a large non profit that works with the homeless in Seattle, I ran into an issue. My client wanted the event to be very interactive with lots pf people up on their feet as often as possible. My interactive lecture warmups were mostly ones you did seated and certainly none of them involved much movment.
Then I remembered the game Evolution.
In Evolution the whole group plays simultaneously. Each participant start as eggs (which they embody by placing their hands over heads making an oval shape and saying "egg, egg, egg"). When one egg finds another they play Rock, Paper, Scissors, Shoot. Whoever wins then evolves into a chicken (which they embody by flapping their wings [arms] and clucking). The loser remains an egg. When a chicken finds another chicken they play Rock, Paper, Scissors, Shoot.. the winner evolves into dinosaur while the loser devolves into egg. There are a few more levels, but you get the idea.
The point of the game is to play; to focus on process (doing the exercise) rather than winning (the results). Run well Evolution encourages listening and "celebrating failure" i.e. not being distracted by setbacks or losing focus on what we can’t control.
My client loved tis exercise and we walked away from the event wit a surprising number of fun videos of 150 people evolving and devolving in a large, large conference space. The overall lecture was on improv lessons related to storytelling. We closed te event by playing a version of one word story tat uses drawing instead of words.
The whole event was a success but the highlight was Evolution. If you engage RA for an improv based workshop you might consider requesting the game as a warm up!
