Improv@Work

An HR consultancy based in the greater Syracuse area wanted to hold an impactful improv-based workshop for its employees. The team of people in question weren't getting along very well and management considered it a priority to find a solution for the unhappy workforce. My initial conversation with the client with sober and serious and I could tell that they were in the market for a solution, not just a workshop.
A common concern I have when speaking with clients about improv-based workshops is that they regard the event as a magical cure-all that can remedy serious workplace problems or deficiencies with just 2 hours of focus on improv on any given afternoon. Of course there is no such wonder workshop. While it is certainly true that the values and lessons of improv comedy are fantastic for team building and do have application to the development of almost any soft skill, it is not true that the effects of studying improv can be felt immediately or tricky or persistent problems can be solved through improv easily in almost no time.
For improv training to address such issues, it is best to set aside a reasonable amount of training time so that employees can truly understand the lessons of improv and apply them to their work. For my client in Syracuse, for instance, I ultimately put together a program for them that included six improv based workshops scheduled to occur every other week for a period of 3 months, or a quarter. These in person interactive learning events would be presented to attendees in conjunction with pre and post work for every session along with suggested reading.
While far more ambitious than a typical improv training event, even a program as built out as the one I described, feels light when compared to the problems created by an unhappy workforce. Yet employers are often cautious to invest in the solution, training. If your team of employees is performing sub optimally, what could be more important to your business than fixing that?

Other Syracuse Improv Spots!
Syracuse has been known for its comedy since the Greeks wrote their first plays, so is it any wonder that modern Syracuse has a wealth of improv comedy options?
Improv classes, workshops, jams and shows are all available at the collective, everything you would want. Plus they are quite punny as evidenced by the festival they run: The Thumbs UPstate Improv Festival. What can I say? I'm a fan.
An interesting nonprofit that aims at supporting local artists and offers improv classes!
