Improv@Work

I had a client in Trenton that had two departments that weren't seeing eye to eye and it got me thinking about one of my favorite improv exercises that I use at corporate workshops. Normally towards the end of a workshop I'll have everyone line up in a straight line and I'll tell them that I'd like them to mime a tug of war. You know, that thing that was popular at picnics in the 1930s?
So half of the line will be one side and the other half will be the other side. I'll explain to them very clearly that the goal of the exercise is to make it look as though there's a real rope.
Every single time I have started this exercise something very strange has happened: the rope hasn't behaved like a rope at all. Instead it has behaved like a rubber band. That's because both sides will move away from each other with little regard to what the other side is doing as they try to win the exercise! This after I told everyone participating to focus not on winning but on making the rope look real. I can stop the exercise, repeat the instructions and guess what happens?
The same exact thing!
That's how quickly a person can forget what they are trying to do. it can happen, just by asking adults to pretend they are engaged in a tug of war. Just by doing that, they can get lost and think they're actually playing tug of war and that it actually matters and that they would actually like to win! They feel that they would actually like to win the fake tug of war so badly that they forget about what they're really trying to do.
Isn't that amazing?
If tat is what happens as a result of asking people to play a theater, think of how confusing it can be to tell a person something like, "You run sales. Revenue generation is your responsibility" or "I'm putting you in charge of customer service, your job is to ensure that every is fulfilled to our highest standards." See how those two goals might lock horns? And what if you forget that you work for a larger company and start tinking all that matters is revenue or all that matters is customer satisfaction.
It can get confusing, but fortunately improv exercises can help sort it all out.
