A Client Story

I once worked with a religious organization that wanted a fun, boisterous, improv based team building workshop, but had an expectation that the men and the women in the workshop never touch each other. it was okay for a man to touch another man or for a woman to touch another woman, but not for a member of one gender to touch a member of the opposite gender.
A restriction like that does curtail some of the fun of an improv comedy workshop. Maybe the most fun exercise that I routinely run in corporate settings is ABC Bodies and that does require some touching. At the same time what kind of improviser would I be if I couldn't adjust to a surprising requests?
I said yes to the client, who happened to be in Tucson, Arizona, and began working on a curriculum that would allow me to work with a room of about 15 people, seven or eight men and seven or eight women. I wanted them to be fully engaged and having a great time the entire Workshop without ever offering an opportunity for someone to end up touching a member of the opposite sex accidentally.
One trick I used was to run exercises concurrently, meaning I would set up two different groups within the room to run the same exercise at the same time. if there was a chance of any physical contact I would separate the groups by gender. This worked great.
Another tactic was to keep the workshop performative at times, meaning I would run an exercise with a few participants while everyone else watched from their seats, like a theater audience would. This also worked great.
The workshop went on without a hitch. The client was very happy and their expectations met. Just goes to show you that there is no such thing as a dumb question and it's always best to ask what you're looking for specifically when arranging an event. If a company can't bend to your needs it's probably a company you shouldn't be working with.
