Improv@Work

If you're looking to work on your team's public speaking or presentation skills, then an improv class, or what we might call an improv for business workshop, is just what the doctor ordered. Recently I spoke with a client based in Tulsa, Oklahoma about bringing Improv to their team for the purposes of honing public speaking skills. Evidently this tech company spent a lot of time using Power Point and the owner was concerned that even with all the technical support available to his team, they might not be successfully communicating messages to those they are meeting with.
A big part of any presentation is confidence. And confidence is a big part of improv too. A lot of times the first big laugh in an improv show isn't when someone says something funny, but is instead when someone says something very confidently.
That's because the audience is nervous for the performers and they want to be set at ease. Someone behaving confidently during an improv show sends the message that they're happy with what they're doing and that you don't need to feel sympathy for them. So the audience rewards them with the laugh.
A very similar Dynamic is at play for the people listening to a public workplace presentation. It is common knowledge that one of the greatest fears people have is public speaking. So when a presentation begins, if the listening audience detects even a whiff of the presenter not feeling very happy with how things are going, there's a chance that listening audience will begin panicking and become very difficult to communicate with.
Even if the presentation itself is bad, it will be far better if the person giving it projects their confidence and happiness with the presentation. Consider the alternative, that the person giving the presentation communicates that they think they're giving a bad presentation. Suddenly a boring presentation becomes a disaster.
Since improvisers face the same problems workplace presenters face, there is a wealth of exercises you can build into an improv class that will directly benefit an individual’s confidence during presentations. And those are exactly the kinds of exercises I've placed into the curriculum for my Tulsa client. I intend to publish that curriculum once the workshop is over sometime after next summer.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or want suggestions for exercises you can run on your own. Terry@radicalagreement.com
