Improv@Work
Wilmington, DE is broadly accepted to be the Corporate Capital of America, so you can imagine I've received quite a few requests to bring workshops to the city. Team building is 50% of all requests across the board and it is no different here. However I've noticed an uptick in requests for leadership, listening and agility for this city.
Maybe the most fun event I've overseen in Wilmington was an interactive lecture for a bank's annual summit. 300 bankers, mostly in leadership, were in attendance and the priority was an excellent experience instead of cost effectiveness. As a result I was able to build a team of 6 expert improvisers from NYC.
To be clear, an interactive lecture can be held for a group of any size with just one instructor, which keeps costs down. The only requirement is that everyone in attendance be able to see and hear the instructor. But when a client can afford additional instructors the event can become much more effective and fun.
The focus was Leadership, which improv lends itself to greatly. Leaders of course, need permission to lead, so improv lessons on listening, communication and believing in yourself are quite pertinent. As always the event began with the lead instructor addressing the audience, setting expectations and creating a playful atmosphere conducive to learning.
In short order the first exercise had been introduced and everyone was ready to try it themselves. With 6 instructors, attendees were able to easily ask questions, receive feedback and have excellent work pointed out and celebrated by everyone in the rather cavernous conference room.
Before you knew it, the room was abuzz with laughter and a strongly positive vibe.
In between exercises the 6 instructors built a generally comedic banter that made the entire event flow easily and kept the overall laughter going. But the additional instructors didn't just keep the event feeling fun, they also added to the learning.
When exercises were misunderstood, it was easy to correct participants and when there was an opportunity to use a group's work as a larger example it could be identified quickly and highlighted for everyone.
Because we had such a large group in town and were spending the night anyway, I added a show for no additional fee. That night at 8 PM attendees gathered again in the large conference space and we performed a comedic improv show with lots of audience interaction and company specifics.
If you aren't familiar with the vibe of a live improv show, it ends up feeling like a series of sketches loosely tied together; sort of like an episode of SNL being written right in front of you. The interaction inspires the sketches, which allows the show to feel tailored to whoever is in the room. The bank loved this aspect of the performance and had us back the next year for an encore!
