Improv@Work

Whenever I get a chance to visit "The City of Arts and Innovation" I'm thrilled. I fancy myself a bit of an entrepreneur and I've always felt I fit right into the city's fabric.
I have a repeat start-up customer there that works in programming. When they first approached me they wanted to improv their team's communication skills, which the founder described as abrupt and unintentionally confrontational. I sent a proposal and waited and when I didn't hear back I called.
The client explained they hadn't reached back out because I had included language in the proposal that explained my workshop wouldn't be immediately impactful, but would instead introduce concepts that would greatly improve communication skills over time if practiced.
We had a frank conversation. It's not just my workshops I explained, it is any L&D event that only happens once. If someone is bad at communication it is a big hurdle and not easily overcome. If getting good at at communication only took 2 hours then practically everyone would be good at it.
That made sense to the founder (owner) of the firm and it lead to good deal of work for me. We settled on a 12 month program, with me or one of my instructors visiting every third Wednesday of the month. We included practice exercises that could be done at home between sessions and also provided supplemental readings.
The effects were profound.
Over time employees that committed themselves to the monthly sessions improved their speaking and communication skills dramatically. We worked on nonverbal communication and that improved too.
Since my first annual contract with them we have continued working on soft skill development on annual basis intermittently. Sometimes we've focused on agility or problem solving and sometimes conflict resolution, but the firm has always invested in multiple sessions allowing for true professional development.
If interested in a similar package, please reach out for a comprehensive proposal. I always offer considerable discounts for multi date events.
Just to be clear, this client story shouldn't be interpreted to mean that standalone events aren't valuable. They are as valuable as a standalone even t can be. They can show you how improvisers think about teamwork, communication, listening, supporting each other, etc.
But if you want to have those abilities yourself you have to practice. You can do that on your own or with an instructor. Instructors help because there are certain dates when you know you will be revisiting material. This helps foster commitment and diligence.
